Hi Scott,

Teachers in China get paid differently for sure, just like in the US where professors in colleges may get paid better than those who work in elementary or middle schools. It also varies from region to region in China. By average, elementary and middle school teachers get about 1,600 RMB/month. High school teachers may get around 2,800 RMB/month. College professors may get 3,500 RMB/month. Please note that these numbers are just base wages, which means it's only part of their income (~60 - 75%). The rest of their income comes in the form of bonuses and post allowances (depending on the teacher's level).

If you are a native English speakers or whatever language and you teach that language in China, you may get paid significantly higher than the local Chinese teachers. From my personal experience, one of my Canadian colleagues made 12,000 RMB/month 5 years ago when I was a teacher in a 3-year community college in Ningbo China. While I was only paid about 2,500 RMB/month (after tax). Ningbo is a high-cost living place, which is just like Shanghai.

I think the tax rate is much lower in China than it is in the West. I am now in the United States and I pay 25% of my income for Tax.

I hope this answers your question.

I would have to agree with Tony on the range of pay.

As a native English speaker with a degree in teaching, I was paid around 3,500 元/month while only working the weekends and two evenings a week!  This was fantastic pay for the number of hours I worked & the plus side was that I enjoyed every moment of teaching such devoted students!
